Puppy Preschool and Socialization

6 week class

This is a great beginning class for puppies and their owners to get a great start.  Puppy Preschool is invaluable in avoiding future behavior problems and making your training experience much smoother.  The class will be a very positive introduction to basic obedience training, preventing behavior problems, and in building a relationship with the other members of the family.  Training and various types of socialization result in a confident well-adjusted adult dog.  A licensed veterinarian will also discuss puppy health and medical needs.  All puppies MUST be current on all vaccinations and have a complete health check-up from a licensed veterinarian and must bring proof to the first class.  This class is held indoors.  Topics to be covered – house breaking, biting, chewing, barking and, digging.  Commands we’ll learn – walking on leash, come, sit, down, stand, off hand signals, voice commands and boundary training for doors and gates.  Class size is limited.  Pre-registration with Kelly’s K-9 College is required to attend the first class.Video Clip of Puppy Pre-School from the Local News HEREApple Quicktime Required***  Large File, please be patient on download.

Fun Nose Work
K9 Nose Work is the specific sport created and sanctioned by the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW). K9 Nose work/Fun nose Work/ scent work / search work, all describe any activity where the dog is using its nose to locate a targeted odor. Any pure breed or mix breed can do this fun new sport. The only requirement is that the dog has a nose and the handler enjoys watching their dog use its natural hunting abilities. The natural progression in fun dog nose work is teaching the dog to find the scent, once they have developed that skill, we will go to exterior searches, interior searches and vehicle searches.
This is a very good sport for dogs who need to drain their mental and physical energy. For shy and timid dogs this is a confidence building activity. It will help  build the bond between the dog and handler.  Reactive dogs will also be able to do this sport. (With a handler who can manage their dog) As the handler your responsible for being excited and upbeat when he finds his scent, and rewarding with food, toys, tug and/or praise. It is rewarding for both you and your dog as you watch them work through many obstacles to get their reward. If you want to compete in this new fun sport the advance classes will prepare you be teaching you competition searches. Dogs must have passed their Birch ORT (Odor recognition test) to participate.

Canine Good Citizen Certification For dogs that already know basic obedience commands and are friendly around people (young and old) and other dogs and animals.  This is an American Kennel Club sponsored program.  Dogs passing all ten “good citizen skills” will receive an official AKC certification.  A must if you are interested in doing Therapy work with your dog.  All breeds are welcome in this two week course.  Bring dog to the first class with rabies vaccination record. Therapy Team

Several different breeds of dogs are often used as therapy dogs due to their calm demeanor, gentle disposition, and friendliness to strangers.

A therapy dog is a dog trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, mental institutions, schools and stressful situations such as disaster areas.

Therapy dogs come in all sizes and breeds.  The most important characteristic of a theapy dog is its temperament.  A good therapy dog must be friendly, patient, confident, at ease in all situations, and gentle.  Therapy dogs must enjoy human contact and be content to be petted and handled, sometimes clumsily.

A therapy dog's primary job is to allow unfamiliar people to make physical contact with it and to enjoy that contact.  Children in particular enjoy hugging animals; adults usually enjoy simply petting the dog.  The dog might need to be lifted onto, or climb onto, an invalid's lap or bed and sit or lie comfortably there.  Many dogs contribute to the visiting experience by performing small tricks for their audiences or by playing carefully structured games.

Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Training For dogs that already know basic obedience commands and are friendly around people (young and older).  Also are friendly with other dogs. Can take the Canine Good Citizen  and Therapy dog Class.
